amidst the dreary winter brown ground, i spy the first sign of spring...
a baby fern, aka fiddlehead, unravels toward the warm spring sun.
the newly emerged fiddlehead looks almost alien.

others join in the stretch toward sunshine.

a day later, violets emerge to befriend them.
an just two days later, many fiddleheads have unrolled into young fern,

others join in the stretch toward sunshine.

a day later, violets emerge to befriend them.

i'm always amazed at the forest fern in my front yard, they go through so many stages, so quickly - and look beautiful the whole time. they'll be full grown, at almost 4 feet tall, by May, and so thick that the ground won't be visable anymore. i plan to follow their journey.
